Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery

The Mini Gastric Bypass surgery

The Mini Gastric bypass is a procedure that was developed to duplicate the weight loss results of the traditional Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery while simplifying the procedure to reduce complications and shorten the time spent in the operating room. The Mini Gastric Bypass procedure is performed laparoscopically, with a minimally invasive incision and takes 45 to 60 minutes to complete. The surgery reduces the stomach to a “pouch” about one quarter the size of the existing stomach and bypasses about one third of the small intestine. Since its debut in 1997, data has accumulated on the mini gastric bypass, leading the procedure to gain popularity due to its results and simple streamlined nature as a modern weight loss surgery alternative to the more invasive Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery.

How does Mini Gastric Bypass work?

The Mini Gastric Bypass helps patients to lose weight in two ways. First, it shrinks the size of the stomach, reducing the amount that is able to be eaten. Patients who undergo the procedure require less food to feel satisfied and comfortable. Then, it also reduces the absorption of the food that is digested, because it bypasses about 200 centimetres of the small intestine, which also results in lower glycemic levels. This causes patients to feel fuller, faster and causes the absorption of calories from food to be reduced. This two-stage approach of reducing both food consumption and absorption can be very effective if also combined with changes to eating and lifestyle habits. Studies on the Mini Gastric Bypass have shown that patients typically lose 75 per cent of excess body weight and most of that loss occurs in the first year after surgery, however individual results may vary, and similar medical outcomes or permanent, long-term results for individuals cannot be guaranteed.

Mini Gastric Bypass advantages

Mini Gastric Bypass surgery is particularly effective at lowering glycemic levels among obese type 2 diabetics. The procedure, which studies have shown can be highly effective at achieving weight loss and lowering blood sugars, can be particularly beneficial to diabetics who have not had success using traditional weight loss methods.
