Rhinoplasty (Nose Job Surgery) in Toronto

Rhinoplasty is an aesthetic surgery procedure designed to reshape and restructure the nose

Rhinoplasty (commonly known as a nose job) can be performed to meet aesthetic goals by reducing or increasing the size of the nose, changing or defining the shape of the tip, straightening the bridge, narrowing the span of the nostrils, or changing the angle between your nose and your upper lip. It can also help to correct a birth defect or injury, or can be done to relieve certain breathing problems.

About Rhinoplasty

Incisions may vary depending on the type of reshaping you require. In the most common procedure, your plastic surgeon will make incisions inside and at the base of the nose. These incisions are tiny and usually invisible once healed. To improve breathing, parts of the nasal septum may be removed. Most procedures only take a few hours in our private surgical room under light general anaesthesia allowing you to return home the same day with a light dressing and splint over your nose. The splint is usually made of tape and an overlay of plastic, metal, or plaster and is applied to help the bone and cartilage of the nose maintain their new shape after surgery.

Depending on the aesthetic goals a variety of techniques may be used:

  • Bridge: The surgeon removes a hump using a chisel or a rasp, then brings the nasal bones together to form a narrower bridge.
  • Tip: Cartilage is trimmed to reshape the tip of the nose.
  • Nostrils: If the nostrils are too wide, the surgeon can remove small wedges of skin from their base, bringing them closer together.
  • Lip: Trimming the septum improves the angle between the nose and upper lip.
  • Airway: To improve the nasal airway, the shape or position of the septum may be altered. Or, the deviated portion of the septum may be partially removed.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

Following a rhinoplasty procedure you will need to wear the splint for a week. Soft nasal packing may also be required, and will be removed after three to five days. You will likely experience some discomfort for the first forty-eight to seventy-two hours. However, this is easily controlled with medication. Swelling and bruising will subside in seven to ten days, and you will be able to return to work. Final swelling may take up to six months to resolve.
